How to Remove Heat Rings and Stains from Wood Furniture

As durable and attractive as wood furniture may be, it has one obvious weak point. Unlike metal or glass, wood can be marred in a matter of second by hot items. Placing a hot pizza box or cup of coffee on wood furniture can and often does produce unsightly white spots or rings that cannot be removed with ordinary polishes and cleaners. The only way to get rid of them is to take the piece to a professional furniture restorer, or use these simple home remedies.

1. Mayo

It might sound strange, but the ingredients in mayonnaise can clear up heat rings and stains. Simply apply the mayo to the affected area and leave it on overnight. Wipe it off the next morning and the marks should be gone.

2. Iron and wet napkin

Because it is highly sensitive to direct heat, set your iron on steam and place a wet napkin over the stain. Then iron the napkin for a few minutes. The mark should disappear, or at least be less noticeable.

3. Hair dryer

Heat stains are caused when the moisture from a hot item is absorbed by the wood’s finish. Removing this moisture with a hair dryer may get rid of the mark.
